Baby-Proofing Your Home

From the author:

A good first step is to get down on your hands and knees and look around your house the way your child does. Infants will get into anything and everything they can get their hands on.

This is by no means a complete list, but it's a good place to start.

Item
Ensure crib slats are no more than 2 3/8 inches apart

Cribs manufactured after 1974 are required by law to meet this, so double check if you're using a hand-me-down crib from someone else.

Use a changing table with at least 2" guardrails, with all needed supplies within reach.
Take any hanging toys out of the crib once baby is able to push up on hands and knees.
Use blind winders, cut the loops on hanging cords or, to be safest, remove blinds entirely and use pull-down shades.
Toy chests should not have lids.
Install non-slip material on the bottom of bath tubs.
Keep toilet lids closed and install lid locks.
Keep all medicines and chemicals up high and out of the reach of infants and toddlers.
Set your hot water thermostat to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Use a high chair with restraining straps run between the legs that prevent baby from sliding out of the chair.
Don't heat bottles in the microwave, as they tend to heat unevenly, raising the potential of mouth scalding.

Ensure your garage door automatically reverses upon contact with an object and repair or replace as needed.
Install gates at the top and bottom of stairs. Gates should never open out onto the stairs.
